beat the heat!

There are two types of people in this world, type 1: The people who wake up in the morning, see sunlight and rejoice at being able to bring out their summer clothes, start making plans to eat lunch outside on the grass, and work out how they can convert most of their day into tanning time. Type 2 on the other hand, is slightly more reluctant to bask in the sun. Type 2 likes the fan on full blast, day dreams about aircon, and whose summer wardrobe consists of a T-shirt and shorts at best. Which are you? I’m a 70% type 2, I’ll happily sit outside if I’m in the shade and my summer wardrobe is booming…but not quite enough to make me actually enjoy sitting in direct sunlight, feeling like a puddle 24/7 or being guilt tripped into thinking watching Netflix in this weather is “wrong” or a “waste”. I’m a October – April kinda girl, May – Mid September and I aren’t the greatest of friends.

If you’ve read the above and realised you are in fact a type 2, not quite a sun hater but more, an autumnal lover, then here are my tips; not only to beat the heat but to actually enjoy it. After all, come January we’ll be wishing we had it back!

1.Dress appropriately.

When I say dress “appropriately”, I don’t mean skirts to your knees and shoulders covered, I actually mean quite the opposite. Being someone who prefers colder months I’ve found I’m reluctant to put away my jeans and long sleeves when warm weather comes; so if you’re still getting annoyed at the heat but find yourself leaving the house in jeans I say, stop, put them away. Find something cooler that works for you, be it skirts, shorts or light fabric trousers. There are different options whatever your style/comfort zone, and preparing for the warm weather by dressing in a way to keep cool, will probably make your day a hell of a lot more enjoyable.

2. Don’t get into bed.

I know that sounds crazy but I haven’t gone completely mad – or maybe the heat has gotten to my head a bit.  We all know how nice it is to be able to sleep under the covers like a bug snug in a rug, but in this weather it’ll do more harm than good. Don’t attempt to get under your duvet even in the first few minutes. Accept that it’s too warm, push the covers to one side and hope that the monsters don’t grab at your exposed feet.Honestly, the difference is amazing, no tossing and turning, and no need for a noisy fan – before doing this I would have sleepless summer nights and now I’m not struggling at all. It sounds basic but you’d be surprised at the number of people who still use a duvet¬

3. Water, water … and more water.

It’s a simple one but you’d be surprised at how many people forget – “Omg why do i have such a bad headache” .. “I hate this heat, I feel awful“. The amount of times I hear things like this said, and I always ask how much water they’ve drunk today, and the answer is always something along the lines of “Yeah.. probably not enough”. When I say I drink close to 3 litres of water a day I mean it. Once you start you can’t stop, and I know it seems like a lot, but once you grasp carrying around a 500ml bottle and refilling, it you find you can’t go without. Keep one next to your desk or in your bag if you’re out and about, you’ll be in a routine in no time.

4. Maybe, enjoy it?

Woah, drastic tip alert. I know all too well that it’s so easy to sit and complain about warm weather but really where is it going to get us? Probably more annoyed than when we started off. Instead, use the time to get outside, even if it’s not for long – sit in the shade on a breezier day and think about when you wished for warmer weather on an icy cold wet evening in February, or in March when the country came to a halt because of snow. Get a good nights sleep, without the covers, drink your water and dress like you’re an ice cream trying to stay cold. You got this.

As this is the jewellerybox blog, I couldn’t not touch on my favourite jewellery piece this month could I? Recently I’ve been complaining (a lot) about bracelets not being small enough for my wrists, however jewellerybox have well and truly come to the rescue, with their answer to what the high end brands have started doing recently. Slider clasps! This rose gold dipped sterling silver bracelet has exceeded all of my expectations, the finish is so high-end you’d think it was worth a fortune. Definitely one for the wish list.
