Sterling silver is 92.5% silver - it is arguably the best composition of silver for jewellery making because it is a lot more durable and harder than pure silver, which is a very soft metal.

You may see .925 mentioned or stamped on some pieces, this refers to the 92.5% silver in the item.

The remaining 7.5% is usually made up of copper, zinc and other metals.

Our studs are measured by their diameter - the distance from one side to the other of the actual stud part of the earring (excluding the pin and back). This gives a sense of the size of the stud in your ear.

Sterling silver is well tolerated by most people and is a popular choice for those with sensitive skin. It doesn't contain nickel in any significant quantity, which is the most common cause of earring-related irritation. If you have particularly reactive skin, look for our 9ct gold or gold plated styles which add an extra protective layer between the metal and your ear.

Stud earrings are one of the most popular choices for first-time piercings. They sit flat against the ear, won't snag on clothing or hair, and are comfortable to sleep in. We'd recommend waiting until your piercing is fully healed (typically 6–8 weeks for lobes) before switching from the jewellery your piercer fitted. Once healed, a small sterling silver stud is an ideal first pair.

Tarnishing is a natural reaction between sterling silver and the air — it's not a fault. To slow it down, store your studs in a sealed bag or your jewellery box when you're not wearing them, and avoid prolonged contact with perfume, moisturiser, and water. If they do start to darken, a quick buff with a silver polishing cloth will bring them straight back.

Sterling silver won't be damaged by a quick shower, but regular exposure to water, (especially salt water) sweat, shampoo and chlorine will speed up tarnishing. For everyday gym sessions or swimming, we'd recommend taking your stud out and storing it somewhere safe.

Tarnishing is not the end of the world - if you do leave it in, just give it a gentle clean with a silver polishing cloth and it'll come up good as new.

Tracked 24 usually takes 24-48 hours, Tracked 48 (Free Shipping, when you spend £30) takes 48-72 hours. These are typical estimates.
