Who are the most powerful people in fashion today?

From designers and models to photographers and well-dressed celebs, and of course, the rising ‘influencers’, the fashion industry is full of trendsetters.

Whether they’re busy creating the latest trends and wearing the latest personalised jewellery pieces, showcasing them on the catwalk or promoting them on their social feeds, these are the people who are helping to dictate what we wear and how we wear it.

But who are the most influential people in fashion in 2021? To find out we’ve ranked some of the industry’s biggest names on their social following, engagement, and number of Google searches.

Note: seeing as our rankings are largely based on social media influence, we haven’t included any individuals who don’t have a public, personal Instagram account, so we acknowledge that some pretty influential names have had to miss out.

Methodology

We looked at over 400 of the most influential people in fashion, and ranked them on the following three factors, giving each person a normalised score out of ten for each factor, before taking an overall average score across each factor.

Google searches

The total number of global Google searches made for each person in 2020, according to Google Ads’ Keyword Planner.

Instagram followers

The total number of Instagram followers of each person, as of February 21 2021.

Instagram engagement rate

The Instagram engagement rate of each person, according to Hype Auditor’s Instagram Engagement Calculator. The engagement rate is calculated as the account’s number of likes and comments as a percentage of followers.
