The piercing debate is constantly brought to the table, time and time again, but what is the right age to get your child’s ears pierced? How young is too young? Should there be legal age restrictions put in place on piercings without the parents’ input?
There is currently no legal age restriction in place for most body piercings, meaning that the decision is entirely on parents as to when their children have their ears pierced. But what do the UK’s parents really think?

Our research revealed that ten is the average age when British children are first getting their ears pierced, the time when they’re nearing the end of primary school, however, one in six waited until they were at least 16.
On the other hand, we can share that just one in six children have their ears pierced aged five or under.

Ear Piercings – Should There Be A Minimum Age Restriction Imposed?
16 – the age you get your National Insurance number, you can legally get married, work full-time, and buy a lottery ticket… or get your ears pierced? While some parents are more than happy to get their little ones’ ears pierced, some believe there should be a minimum age requirement without parental consent.
50% believe there should be a minimum age of 16 and a small minority believe that it should be even higher, at aged 18, although over a third believe that it should stay as it is, with no minimum age.
Nose Piercings – Should There Be A Minimum Age Restriction Imposed?
Getting an extra hole in your nose isn’t a decision that many would take lightly – at least, that’s what the UK’s parents think. In fact, over 40% believe that you should be at least 16 to get your nose pierced, with a similar amount thinking it should be even higher, at 18. 10% even think it should have a minimum restriction of 21 years of age. There is a small minority of just under 10% that think anyone, of any age should be able to get their nose pierced.
Navel (Belly Button) Piercings – Should There Be A Minimum Age Restriction Imposed?
When it comes to belly button piercings, the majority of UK parents believe that you should be at least 16. Just under 40% also believe that it should be higher, at aged 18. 15% believe that you should be aged at least 21 and just under 10% of parents think that it should stay the same, with no age limit.
Tongue Piercings – Should There Be A Minimum Age Restriction Imposed?
While the trend was more desirable back in the ’90s, believe it or not, tongue piercings are still as popular as ever. However, if the parents of the UK had their way, you would have to be at least 18. Just over 40% think you should be at least 18 to get your tongue pierced, and just under 30% think you should be at least 16. A small percentage believe it should stay the same, with no age restriction.
