You should always pick jewellery based on what you love, but if you’re struggling to decide between metals, looking at your skin tone can help you to determine which metal will suit you best.

Skin tones can generally be broken down into three categories; cool, warm & neutral. Identifying your skin tone can be done really easily just by looking at your veins and the undertones of your skin.

cool skin tone

Cool skin tones can be identified by bluish colored veins. People with cooler skin tones may notice pinkish undertones when looking in the mirror. Those with cool skin tones look good in lighter metals such as white gold and silver, and stones such as pearl, blue sapphire, amethyst, emerald & opal.

warm skin tone

Warmer skin tones can be identified by greenish coloured veins and yellow or golden tones to the skin. Those with warm skin tones look good in yellow and rose gold, copper and brass jewellery, and gemstones with warmer undertones such as citrine, peridot, ruby & alexandrite.

neutral skin tone

If you have a neutral skin tone, meaning you have traits of both cool and warm, you’ll suit both lighter metals and yellow metals, so we probably haven’t made your jewellery buying decisions any easier!

Another way to to determine which skin tone you have is to simply put on a piece of silver or gold jewellery and see which you prefer against your skin. If you find yourself preferring silver you probably lean more on the cool side, whereas if you prefer gold it’s likely your skin is more warm-toned.

Our final, and more important piece of advice for choosing which colour jewellery to go for – choose what you love, there are no rules!
